The Client:
The United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The Challenge:
NASA manages the world’s most rigorous selection and training process. Every few years, thousands of decorated military officers, field leading scientists, and cutting-edge engineers apply to become astronauts. Less than 0.1% of this already exceptional group will make final selection as an Astronaut Candidate (ASCAN). The public announcement of a new ten-person ASCAN cohort thrusts these individuals onto new terrain: representing NASA in a battery of media profiles, interviews, and public engagements. Although the candidates have excelled in their own field – and often, more than one – they’ve generally not held a public-facing position. Success here requires not just inspiring hope, but also support for the taxpayer dollars invested in the agency each year.
Why WPNT?
WPNT has partnered with NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) to provide media training to every class of Astronaut Candidates since 2017. WPNT curriculum is founded on the recognition that lasting improvement requires realistic, hands-on training. Every WPNT program provides multiple opportunities to practice an upcoming presentation or interview, receive tailored feedback, and immediately implement improvements.
The Impact:
For nearly a decade, WPNT’s Media Training has been the final classroom module Astronaut Candidates receive before their public announcement. Conducted on-site at JSC, this intense, four-hour program equips participants to better understand the media landscape and leverage their engagements. In group and breakout sessions, WPNT coaches cover key skills, including Audience Analysis, Understanding the Media Filter, and Managing Q&A. Critically, the expertise of WPNT audiovisual technicians ensures a realistic “practice like you play” simulation. Astronaut Candidates leave the program empowered to continue their track record of excellence as the new public faces of American space exploration.
Selected participant feedback from participating Astronaut Candidates:
“It was an enormous confidence booster. I feel much better prepared.”
“Exceptional! Amazing to learn from the pros!”
“Great opportunity to practice, get reps, and gain confidence.”
“Absolutely recommend - high value for time.”
